A pediatric dentist who has met the eligibility requirements can apply to the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

The applicant needs to complete the Application and Credentials Survey for Board Candidacy AND the application for the Qualifying Examination. After the applicant's applications and credentials have been reviewed and approved the applicant is considered a Candidate.

You will need to:

  1. The 2007-2008 Application and Credentials Survey for Board Candidacy may be submitted at anytime following completion of advanced education in Pediatric Dentistry which has been approved by the American Dental Association/Commission on Dental Accreditation or the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada.
  2. The applicant must submit a notarized legible copy of both of the following:
    * certificate or diploma where the advanced specialty education program in pediatric dentistry was completed and
    * an active license to practice dentistry.
  3. The Credentials Survey must be completed and returned with the application and requested information in #2.
  4. You will be registering for the Qualifying Examination at the same time as you are applying to the Board.
  5. Mail applications and fees to: ABPD, 325 E. Washington Street, Suite 208, Iowa City, IA 52240-3959.

A Candidate must be active in the examination process and will have five years from the date of taking their first Qualifying Examination to complete the certification process; if not achieved during this period Candidacy status is terminated.

Candidate status is maintained annually with payment of the Maintenance of Candidacy fee. Failure to pay this fee results in loss of Candidacy status. Candidacy status can be regained by application.

See ABPD Overview for additional information.
