Welcome to the ABPD Blog
It is an honor and my pleasure to write this inaugural blog for the American Board of Pediatrics Dentistry. We hope these short notes will help keep us focused on the pursuit of excellence for the children that we serve in our daily practices. Ralph Ireland, the first chief staff officer for the board, wrote in the monograph entitled, The American Board of Pedodontics, the First 30 Years, circa 1971, about the formation of the Board:
“The push toward specialization in dentistry began in 1938 when representatives from various dental organizations attended a conference in St. Louis, Missouri, on October 24 to discuss specialization.”
At the 1940 business meeting of the American Society of Dentistry for Children (the original sponsors of ABPD) in Cleveland, Ohio, the executive committee passed a resolution to select and immediately appointed a board (Drs. Easlick, Brauer, Sweet, Lamons and Ireland) to form the American Board of Pedodontics. Between 1940 and 1942, members of the newly formed Board prepared bylaws and corporation documents.
I make this reference because as you may know we are celebrating our 75th anniversary during the entire year of 2015. Please join us in acknowledging all of the hard work of our past and current volunteer examiners and board members in enhancing the mission and vision of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Happy New Year to you all! We look forward to seeing and working with you over the coming anniversary year.
