Examination Committees and Director applications now open!
Applications are now open for the 2026 Examination Committees and for our next director. Applications are on the dashboards of Diplomates who have reached the minimum qualifications.

Applications are now open for the Examination Committees (EC) and an opening on the Board of Directors (BOD).
But who should apply? And why? What does it really entail to be one of these volunteers? What are the differences in the opportunities?
Opportunities
Examination Committees
The Examination Committees are responsible for developing and maintaining the content for various certification exams and programs. The committees are composed of subject matter experts in the field of pediatric dentistry. All committee members are expected to attend annual workshops, suggest new topics, and collaborate with their team.
Committee Roles
- Qualifying Examination Committee (QEC): Writes and edits multiple-choice questions for the initial certification exam.
- Oral Clinical Examination Committee (OCEC): Develops clinical case vignettes for the oral examination.
- Continuing Certification Committee (CCC): Creates questions for the continuing certification program.
Each committee consists of the following roles: Chair, Vice Chair, Part Leader, and Member. Being on one of the Examination Committees is, in a way, a starter position for leadership. Starting as a member, after two years, diplomates are eligible to apply for leadership positions as they become available.
This five-year term will begin in January of 2026 and run through December of 2030.
Board of Directors
This is a significant six-year commitment where you'll progress from Director to President. The role requires about 15 hours of work per month, involving in-person meetings, exams, and conference calls. The ideal candidate is a highly qualified and experienced board-certified pediatric dentist who can act with integrity and strategic leadership. Essentially, these are the key decision-makers responsible for advancing the mission of the ABPD and advocating for board certification.
This six-year term will begin officially in January of 2027 and run through December of 2032.
Eligibility
First, it should be noted that only active diplomates in good standing are eligible to apply for any roles. All applicants must also be active members of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and must be actively involved in direct patient care or clinical teaching of pediatric dentistry on a weekly basis. Additional eligibility and application requirements for each opportunity are outlined in the chart to the right. (click to enlarge)
If the board certification process and its integrity are important to you, volunteering with ABPD could be a great fit!
